This study explores various functions of narrative in Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Charlie's narrative in his journal overthrows general meanings of metaphors, which induces active engagement on the part of its readers. For example, 'light' whose general meaning is 'intellect', signifies 'emotion' in the novel. Readers are supposed to fill various gaps in meaning by inferencing. So, they can actively participate in making meaning of the text in relation to the past, present, and future of the narrator. It becomes evident that the features of a narrative invite readers to construct their own interpretation while they read the text. The narrative of Flowers for Algernon functions as a psychotherapy as well. First, the protagonist can be psychologically healthy by confronting his own trauma and expressing it in a form of narrative. Secondly, it provides the readers with cures by showing how the protagonist overcomes his trauma. That is possible because the confusion that Charlie suffers is inscribed in his narrative, and when he repeats remembering and expressing the confusion, not only he but also readers can experience the healing moment. When we analyse the structure of Charlie's narrative, it is positive that narratives are beneficial to our students with regard to literature education since narratives propel interactions between readers and texts. Besides, it reflects our complex inner landscapes in the process of the interaction, which leads to our mental growth and cure.
