The Effect of Self-Directed English Learning Contract Worksheet on College Students' Academic Self-efficacy and TOEIC Achievement

This study aimed to explore the effect of the self-directed English Learning Contract Worksheet not only on English learners' academic self-efficacy but on English learners' TOEIC achievement. For this study, an English learning Contract Worksheet was developed to promote English learner's self-directed learning and an English teaching model using the developed worksheet was implemented to a group of 199 English learners in a college general English class. The participants of this study completed their individual self-directed English learning contract worksheets with the support of their English instructor. Based on the English learning contracts, the participants individually conducted a series of self-directed English learning activities: establishing individual English learning goal, setting the self-directed English learning plans and strategies, self-checking their English learning outcomes. A couple of the scales, the academic self-efficacy scale developed by Kim et al.(2001) and the satisfaction checking list developed by the researcher were used to confirm the level of the participants' self-checking and self-evaluation of their learning outcomes. The researcher analyzed the data collected from the results of the participants' answers on the two given scales and from the participants' achievements regarding TOEIC. The results of the analyses showed the significant differences between pre and post answers related to the participants' academic self- efficacy. Therefore, it is concluded that the implementation of the English Learning Contract worksheet has an effect on improving the participants' academic self-efficacy and TOEIC achievement.
