Social Signaling Theory and Online Mass Migration in Cyberspace

이 논문은 사이버공간에서 한 서비스의 이용자들이 대규모로 이탈하여 다른 서비스로 이동해 가는 현상을 '온라인 집단이주'로 개념화하고, 이러한 집단이주가 일어나는 과정을 사회적 신호이론을 활용하여 분석한다. 저널리즘이나 학계 일부에서 흔히 언급하는 '사이버망명'은 '정치적 동기'에서 비롯되는 온라인 집단이주의 한 유형이지 전체가 아니다. 이 논문에서는 유사한 서비스를 제공하면서 한 때 각 분야를 주도하였지만 이용자의 대량 이탈로 급격히 쇠퇴한 '마이스페이스'와 '싸이월드'의 사례를 비교하여, 온라인 정체성의 관리와 관련된 신호의 비용과 혜택이라는 측면에서 기술사회적 요인들이 온라인 집단이주에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 두 사례 모두 모바일 환경에 적절하게 대응하지 못함으로써 정체성 신호의 신호적 혜택이 감소하는 결과를 초래하였다. 또한 마이스페이스에서는 복수 계정과 자유로운 프로파일 관리를 허용함으로써 정체성 기만에 따른 신호의 생산과 처벌 비용의 증가가 이용자 이탈의 중요한 원인으로 작용하였다. 반면에 싸이월드에서는 실명 정책에 따른 정보유출과 사생활 침해 위험, 감시와 검열의 우려 등에 따른 약탈비용의 증가가 이용자 이탈의 중요한 요인으로 작용하였다. 두 사례가 보여주듯이 온라인 집단이주 현상은 어느 하나의 요인에 의해 비롯되는 것이 아니며, 다양한 기술적, 사회적 요인들이 결합되면서 복합적으로 작용한 결과이다.

This paper investigates the effects of benefits and costs of social signaling associated with online identity management on 'online mass migration,' using social signaling theory. Online mass migration is a massive movement of users from a service or site to other services or sites. The term 'cyber-asylum,' as it is commonly used in journalism and parts of academia, is one of many types of online mass migration initiated by a political motive. Two cases of social networking services(SNS), MySpace and CyWorld, were analyzed and compared with respect to benefits and costs of signaling online identity. The results show that both MySpace and CyWorld have failed to adapt to the emergent mobile computing environment, resulting in decrease of the benefits of both sender and receiver of identity signal. In addition, while identity deception due to the multiple accounts policy, pseudonymity, and wide range of profile customization have lead to increase of both production and punishment cost for the MySpace case, the real identity policy, threats to personal information and privacy, and fear of surveillance and censorship have lead to increase of predation cost for the CyWorld case. As these two cases reveal, the online mass migration is the result of a complex interplay of technological and social factors associated with identity management in cyberspace.
