크로아티아 일리리아 운동의 전개와 의미 연구

The Development and Accomplishment of the Croatian Illyrian Movement

일리리아 운동(Illyrian movement)은 1836년부터 1848년까지 크로아티아에서 발생하였던 남슬라브 민족주의 운동이다. 일리리아 운동의 목표는 크로아티아, 슬로베니아, 세르비아, 보스니아, 몬테네그로, 마케도니아, 불가리아를 포함하는 오스트리아-헝가리 제국과 오스만 제국을 견제할 수 있는 남슬라브 정치 공동체와 이를 뒷받침해줄 상징적인 언어 공동체의 완성이었다. 일리리아 운동은 크로아티아 민족의 재건을 꿈꾸던 크로아티아 민족주의 세력에게는 외세의 간섭으로 인해 희미해져가던 민족 정체성을 다시 확립하는 계기가 되었다. 일리리아 운동은 크로아티아 민족의 재건을 넘어 크로아티아인에게 이웃한 슬라브 민족과 함께 강력한 일리리아 왕국을 건설하는 희망을 가져다주었다. 일리리아 운동은 정치 부분과 문화 부분을 포함하는 전체적 남슬라브 민족주의 운동이었으나 운동의 정치적 역량은 매우 빈약하였다. 이러한 배경으로 일리리아 운동은 오늘날 '낭만적 민족주의 운동(Romantic Nationalism)' 또는 단순한 문화운동으로 평가받기도 한다. 그러나 일리리아 운동의 문야 부분 목표도 궁극적으로는 정치 부분을 지향하고 있었고 방법론적으로 언어, 문학, 문화를 선택적으로 사용하였다고 평가 할 수 있다. 이 연구는 일차적으로 당시 사회적 배경과 일리리즘(Illyrism)의 이론적 배경을 정리하였고, 이차적으로 운동이 제시하였던 비전과 내용을 운동의 전개과정에 따라 시기적으로 분석하였다. 그리고 이 정리와 분석을 바탕으로 남슬라브 민족의 통합을 위한 크로아티아 버전이라 할 수 있는 일리리아 운동이 갖는 의미를 재평가해보고자 시도하였다.

The Illyrian movement was the South Slavic national movement occurred in Croatia from 1836 to 1848. The goal of the Illyrian movement was the completion of the South Slavic political community-including countries of Croatia, Slovenia, Servia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Bulgaria- and the symbolic linguistic community for it so as to contain Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire. The Illyrian movement made the Croatian nationalists who had desired Croatian national revival reestablish its national identity weakened with intervention of foreign power. Furthermore, the Illyrian movement brought Croatian people hope to build the powerful South Slavic nation with neighboring Slavic nations. The Illyrian movement was the South Slavic national movement having both political and cultural sides, but because of the weakness in the political side, it is often estimated as a romantic nationalist movement or just simple cultural movement. Though methodologically cultural side of the Illyrian movement used language, literature, and culture selectively, it ultimately aimed the political side. This study analyzed the theoretical background of the Illyrian movement and the vision of the unification of the South Slavs suggested by this movement, organized its developmental stages based on the changes of time and circumstances, and evaluated the meaning of the movement.
