A Study on Themes in al-Shābbī's Poetry

This paper aims at studying themes presented in Tunisian great poet of romanticism al-Sha­bbi's poems. As the result it follows that the themes are classified into two groups, the one related to al-Shābbī's personal life and the other composed from social motives. The first group includes such themes as the poet's despair, feeling of sorrow and vanity of life, which on the whole are derived from his tragic life, exposing his pessimistic vision of life. While it includes themes showing al-Shābbī's cheerful view of life, which are represented by the pleasant memory of his childhood, his affection for nature and the glorification of poetry. The second group includes themes of social revolution, which indicate al-Sha­bbi as an intellectual in agony, worried about the fate of his people suffering from the wretched life caused by the French colonialism. On this al-Shābbī tries to inspire the will to live into his people's hearts. In conclusion it is worth while saying that al-Sha­bbi through his keen sensibility has clearly displayed the discord in his mind between the despair of tragic life and the attachment to life.
