This paper aims at translating and understanding an Iraqi poet Badr Shākir al-Sayyāb(1926-1964)'s two arabic poems 「al-Nahr wa al-Mawt(The River and Death)」and「'Unshūdah al-Maṭar(Song of the Rain)」, which are considered of his best Tammuzian poems. In 「al-Nahr wa al-Mawt」al-Sayyāb uses images of the River Buwayb which has been the object of longing in his childhood, as a substitute for the myth of Tammuz, the god of fertility. The archetypal images of the River in this poem alludes to abyss of death which is to be connected to the recovery of life at the last moment. The River reflect al-Sayyāb's will and desire to get over the unendurable realities through self-sacrifice. In 「'Unshūdah al-Maṭar」the images of rain suggest al-Sayyāb's real situation driven to despair, as well as his hope of the renewal and revival of life. The despair which the rain has brought to al-Sayyāb's heart is related to the national tragedy of Iraqi people in a state of wretchedness. But the poet believes firmly that his people will overcome the difficulties, cherishing a hope for the bright future, like fertility and richness that rain will bring to the nature.
