This paper studies the development of modern Arabic novel focusing on its theme and narrative technique. And this study concentrates on Egyptian novel as it has taken a leading role in modern Arabic novel. The situation of development is devided into three stages. The novels of first stage deal with Egytian identity. Return of Spirit deals with Egytian nationalism and rebirth of its glory. And its distinctive technique is vivd dialogue. The Lamp of Ummu Hashim deals with the harmony of Western materialism and Arab spiritualism, and it is distinguished with the concrete descriptions and speedy style. The novels in the second stage deal with denouncement of social absurdity. The Earth deals with the problems of Egytian villages and the struggle of peasants to keep their lands, and its double narrative point makes the story realistic. The Shame deals with the absurdity prevailed in the society. The novels in the third stage deal with the criticism of political situation. Miramar deals with the unstable situation after 1952 Revolution and The Journey deals with the dictatorship of Nasser. This study results in that modern Arabic novel reflects the social situation in its theme and applies the suitable technique to express the theme efficiently.
