A Study on the Influence of T.S. Eliot on the Modern Arabic Free Verse

The purpose of this paper is to study on the Arab poets influenced from T.S. Eliot. They borrowed the form(the free verse), the subject(death and resurrection), the styles and the images from T.S. Eliot and creatively used them to express arab's reality. Adonis(Aii Ahmad Said) is considered as being among the most important modern Arab poets. He broke with the diction and style of traditional poems, and introduced a new and powerful syntax. He used myths from older religions, where the resurrecting gods of Tammuz, Adonis and Phoenix were central symbols. Adonis is a permanent candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literaure. And Badr Shakir al-Sayyab is a leading figure in the innovative movement of contemporary Arabic poetry. He changed the poetic sensibility of the Arabs and opened new horizons for them which brought them out of an age-old literary tradition. And then Abdul Wahab al-Bayyati is considered one of the pioneers of the modern Arab poetry. He had a remarkable cultural and literary presence on the Arab and international levels.
