The Arabic before the revelation of Islam was the language of nomadic people who lived in north and middle part of the Arabia peninsula. But in the middle of the 7th century, when the Islam was appeared, Arabic has became a standard language as a literary lang1,1age of whole Arab society. Almost all of the linguists coincide with dividing Arabic dialects into Eastern and Western dialects. Eastern dialects include region of Levant (Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Palestine), Arabia peninsula and Egypt, and Western dialects include Libya. Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The object of this paper is to investigate the linguistic situation of Syria in Levant, focusing on the relations between aboriginal languages and Arabic. And this paper also aims at analyzing the phonological characteristics based on the bilingual status between literary and colloquial languages. The range of this study constricts to urban people of Damascus. Finally, another purpose of this study is to suggest effective teaching method of Syrian dialect by detecting the phonological characteristics of MSA and Syrian dialect. Besides. this paper aims to find out relationship of dialects in Arab region by observing connection of other Arabic dialects' phonetic rules.
