Dinshaway virgin or The maiden of Dinshaway, the first novel written by Mahmud Tahir Haqqi, deals with a historical events that took place at Dinshaway on 1906, between Egyptian villagers and British officers during a pigeon shoot and led to the killing of one officer and to the execution of four Egyptian fellahin. This work can be regarded as the first modern Egyptian novel than Haycal's Zaynab and the first Egyptian best-seller due to the actuality of its topic, to the unpretentious style, to the realistic presentation of the Egyptian countryside and to its entertaining qualities. This novel especially is recorded as a important landmark in the evolution of the modern Egyptian novel from the first decade of this country to the present day. As the first novel of the serious novelistic attempts in Egypt, it is unjustifiable that it still has not received the attention it deserves from critics and scholars and therefore it should be properly reevaluated from the point of artistic merits and its contribution in the evolution of the modern Egyptian novel.
