A Study on selection of basic Arabic vocabulary

To select basic vocabulary for the elementary level constitutes an essential process for any foreign language education. The selection lessens study loads of learners while it fulfills their study needs and it enhances study effectiveness. This study aims to analyze principles with regard to selecting basic Arabic vocabulary and their usages, with particular focus on the basic Arabic vocabulary list prepared by Korean ministry of Education. The study suggests, from the review of the established theoretical researches, that objective categories (frequency, range, coverage) and psychological categories (availability, familiarity, learnability, learner's needs) need to be included for further considerations in the selection process. It moves on to examine the basic Arabic vocabulary list formulated by the Ministry of Education. The examination raises the need for the scholars in the concerned field to develop the list. They need to work towards laying down more reasonable terms and conditions for the selection process that will in turn help to make a selection of more practical and widely-used vocabularies amongst Arab countries.
