A Study on the Linguistic Cohesion in the News Text in the Al-Jazeera

Supposing that the text is a semantic unit surpassing the scope of a sentence, this study is concerned with the cohesion as one of the components of textuality. The term 'cohesion' is viewed here as the process of maintaining sequential connectivity of text building elements. Therefore, this study will examine the cohesive role of connectives in Arabic news texts. To this end, the study will focus on the news articles covered by Al-Jazeera, Arabic language T.V. channel during a two-day period from April 14 to 15, 2003 when the U.S forces occupied Tikrit in the Iraqi war. It also included three news analysis stories or commentary articles for comparison.
