An Analysis of the Egyptian Novel 「Our Neighborhood Kids」: With Special Symbols

The Arab world's most famous novelist and writer, Najīb Maḥfūẓ was born in 'al-Jamaliya, Cairo. The family lived in 'al-Jamaliya and 'al-'Abbasiya, which have provided the backdrop for most of his works. His father was a civil servant, and Mahfouz eventually followed in his footsteps. In his childhood his mother often took him to museums and Egyptian history later became a major theme is many of his works. He graduated from Cairo University in 1934. By 1936, having spent a year working on an Ministry of Mortmain Endowments, he decided to become a professional writer. And he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1988. Mahfouz has written some 40 novels and short story collections, 30 screenplays, and many plays. 「Our Neighborhood Kids」 (1959) one of Najīb Maḥfūẓ's best known works, has been banned in Egypt for alleged blasphemy. that is to say, This novel portrayed the patriarch 'al-Jabalāwī and his children, average Egyptians living the lives of Cain and Abel, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. 'al-Jabalāwī has built a great mansion in an oasis in the middle of a barren desert ; his estate becomes the scene of a family feud which continues for generations... The story recreates the history of the monotheistic Abrahamic religions, allegorised against the setting of an imaginary Cairene alley. The first four sections retell, in succession, the stories of Adam (and his sons), Moses, Jesus and Muhammad; the protagonist of the book's fifth section (who, significantly, comes after the Prophet of Islam) symbolizes modern science. Because of this contents, It was never officially approved by the government for publication. It was, however, published in full book form in Lebanon in 1967, slightly expurgated. And Maḥfūẓ won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1988, after the Nobel Prize had revived interest in it. and about 35 years after the profanity was issued - He was attacked and stabbed in the neck by two extremists outside his Cairo home, at the age of 83, in 1994. This paper analyzed on contents of this novel with special symbols which the muslims had engendered a lot of controversy. 'al-Jabalāwī and Jabal and Rifāh and Qāsim each symbolize The God and Moses and Jesus and Muhammad, the last'Arafah symbolizes modem science.
