A Study on the Karma mirrors

This study is about Buddhist ritual instrument of the Karma mirror(業鏡) and Bodhi site with Mirror stand(鏡壇) motif appeared in The Sutra of the Ten Kings's Judgement and Junjejeongeop. In currently, traditional temples and museums have up to more than twenties Karma mirrors made of copper or wood that were composed of Lotus shaped base and auspicious animals such as lion or dragon standing and a diameter of approximately 50-60cm mirror attached flame pattern. So far it has been called Karma mirror(業鏡臺) because of the similarities with all the elements of stand and mirror but a result of examining the Karma mirror with inscriptions, in case of The Sutra of the Ten Kings's Judgement contains in the functionality and symbolism instrument that illuminate the task of the sinner, and mirror in Bodhi site with Mirror stand(鏡壇) of Junjejeongeop is for Esotetic Buddhism Ritual instrument. In addition, it is need to be a clear difference between mirror of Karma mirror and mirror of Bodhi site with Mirror stand. Although there is no authority is unknown, the Karma mirror and the polished mirror(明鏡), 佛影牌 also a challenge to state the name basis. By the late Joseon Dynasty, made dharani(陀羅尼) and Esotetic Buddhism sutras publishing was actively opplsed to reduced crafts productions. This review is an attempt to prestigious history and literature records, proper name reflects the conscious function and at the time of making the original name to reduce the gap between the derived name. Discussion through research and excavation of more cases in the future and look forward to making progress.
