The survey was conducted on 237 high school students in Daegu (117 male; 120 female) to examine their beverage intake status. The participants quantified their habitual beverage intake as the number of cups ingested perweek or day. The body mass index was calculated as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg/m²). Milk and dairy products had the highest intake frequency among both genders, followed by carbonated drinks for male and fruit/vegetable juices for female students. Approximately 74.5% of female and 58.1% of male students considered the effect of beverage intake on their body weight. When purchasing beverages, male students considered the taste and price, while female students considered taste, price and calories. Students who considered the adverse health effects of beverages consumed fewer carbonated drinks (p < 0.001) and fruit juices (p < 0.05). Milk and dairy products were reported to have the highest intake frequency followed by the carbonated drinks. A majority of subjects responded that they rarely consumed green tea, and tea consumption was high among female students to preventing obesity. Educating students to increase green tea consumption in place of sugar-sweetened beverages may help prevent obesity, boosts immunity, and promote rehydration.
