타이완에서 장소를 둘러싼 정체성과 기억의 정치

Politics of Identities and Memories Surround Places in Taiwan

본 연구는 타이완의 지역적 맥락에서 집단 정체성이 어떻게 구성되고 변화해 왔는지를 추적한다. 이어 이러한 정체성의 기반이 되는 기억의 장소들과 이들 장소를 둘러싸고 발생하는 기억의 정치의 제 양상을 검토한다. 과거 중화민족주의에 기반 한 단일한 국가 정체성은 1990년대 이후 서로 다른 족군에 기반 한 타이완 정체성에 의해도전받고 있다. 이러한 정체성의 구성은 다양한 기대와 열망 등이 충돌하는 과정이었을 뿐 아니라, 동시에 상이한기억이 갈등ㆍ경합하는 기억의 정치가 발휘되는 과정이었다. 지난 20여 년간 타이완에서는 기념비와 기념관, 기념의식을 비롯하여, 도로와 공공장소 등의 각종 명칭의 개정, 교과서의 서술 방향 등 다양한 차원의 기억의 장소에서 기억의 정치가 치열하게 펼쳐졌다.

This paper explores how collective identities have been constructed and changed in Taiwan context. And it investigates places of memory that basis of identities and the politics of memory surround these places. In 1990s, a past Chinese identity based on Sinocentric nationalism had been challenged by a Taiwan identity based on various ethnicities. The construction of these multiple identities was a conflict process between various anticipations and desires, at the same time it was a political process between different memories of places. For the past 20 years, there were fierce battles for memories surround places including monuments, museums, memorial ceremonies, renaming of roads and public spaces, and narratives of textbook in Taiwan.
