A Study on a poetry magazine, 『The Soul of Poetry』(『시정신』)

This study was aimed to discover a poetry magazine, 『the Soul of Poetry』 (『시정신』), reveal its value and importance in terms of history of literary world, and make sure that it provides a turning point to the history of poetry in Gwangju and Jeonnam Area by catching a glimpse of how it was published and which poets and poems were inserted. In 1952, during the Korean War, its publication of 『the Soul of Poetry』 was inaugurated. Until now, total 5 volumes were published by Cha Jaeseok, who exerted his artistic senses for the birth of 'a stylish collection of illustrated poems.' It is a fruit of the will to succeed to 'Poetic Literature School.' It has a significance that it was the only poetry magazine during the Korean War. Since the initial issue in which poets from Honam area participated, favorable response of literary world resulted in the participation of major poets from literary circles in the metropolis. It has the importance in respect of history of literary world as a case that a local poet magazine attacked literary circles in the metropolis. Though discovering the poetry magazine, 『The Soul of Poetry』(『시정신』), has its own meaning of itself, it contributes to publishing collections and studying of missing poems by introducing new poems by many poets. Moreover, it has a more special meaning in respect of the history of paintings that Korean representative artists cooperated for 『the Soul of Poetry』. Therefore, it was confirmed that discovering the poetry magazine, 『The Soul of Poetry』(『시정신』), was a turning point for the historic development of Gwangju and Jeonnam regional literary magazine and the literature history of Gwangju and Jeonnam area.
