This study introduces the use of QR (quick reaction) codes and a recording function in a smartphone as tools that can be used to facilitate a learning activity in a large English class in which a movie is used. In those classes that use movies, most of the activities and techniques tend to focus on small classes, which are relatively easy for a teacher to control and handle. In a large English class, both tools are used to carry out a group activity designed to increase the leaners' class participation. The study shows that two kinds of tools have an influence on interaction between learners and that they are ultimately helpful in learning through listening. A task for a group activity is given via a QR code, which leads learners to engage in an active discussion and the free exchange of opinions. A recording function is used to arouse interest in and establish motivation for listening. The result indicates that the two kinds of tools introduced above are effective for promoting interaction between learners. Consequently, QR codes and a recording function are helpful in increasing the listening comprehension ability of students in a large English class.
