This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a model for teaching local and foreign cultures as part of English class at the primary school. Moran’s(2001) teaching of culture model was modified for this study. Twenty-five 6th graders participated in the study. There were four stages in the teaching model. The first stage was'Knowing About'; receiving cultural information or experiencing cultural behaviors. The next stage was ‘Knowing Oneself'; reflecting on oneself regarding one’s own culture. The third stage was 'Comparing'; acknowledging differences between local and foreign cultures, and the final stage was 'Expressing'; expressing one's thoughts or experiences. Major findings were as follows: firstly, students showed improvements in writing as the experiment went on; their sentence organization became more sophisticated, and more diverse words were being used. Secondly, students' interest in foreign cultures increased along with their understanding of and pride in their own culture. Finally, even the students previously reluctant to study English realized the importance of English as a lingua franca and became more motivated to learn it. Based on the results from this study, some practical suggestions have been made for the further studies on teaching primary English and cultures.
