인과매개모형을 활용한 영어 사교육 참여의 학업성취도 향상효과 분석

Causal Mediation Effect of English Private Tutoring Participation on Middle School Students' Achievement

이 연구에서는 서울교육종단연구 자료에 인과매개모형을 적용하여 서울시 중학교 학생들의 영어 사교육 참여의 학업성취도 향상 효과를 살펴보았다. 먼저, 중학교 2학년 시기 사교육 참여의 선택편의만 조정하여 분석했을 때, 중학교 2학년 시기 사교육 참여가 중학교 3학년 시기 사교육 참여를 매개로 중학교 3학년 시기 영어성취도에 미치는 매개효과와 중학교 2학년 시기 사교육 참여가 중학교 3학년 시기 영어성취도에 미치는 직접효과 모두 정적으로 유의하였다. 다음으로, 중학교 3학년 시기 사교육 참여의 선택편의만 조정하여 분석하면, 중학교 2학년 시기 사교육 참여가 중학교 3학년 시기 사교육 참여를 매개로 중학교 3학년 시기 영어성취도에 미치는 매개효과는 유의하지만, 중학교 2학년 시기 사교육 참여가 중학교 3학년 시기 영어성취도에 미치는 직접효과는 유의하지 않았다. 마지막으로, 중학교 2학년 시기 사교육 참여와 중학교 3학년 시기 사교육 참여의 선택편의를 모두 조정한 인과매개모형을 적용하여 분석한 결과, 중학교 2학년 시기 사교육 참여가 중학교 3학년 시기 사교육 참여를 매개로 중학교 3학년 시기 학업성취도 향상에 미치는 매개효과는 유의하였으나, 중학교 2학년 시기 사교육 참여가 중학교 3학년 시기 학업성취도에 미치는 직접효과는 유의하지 않았고, 전체효과도 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 사교육 참여의 선택편의를 고려하지 않은 일반매개모형을 적용하여 분석한 결과와 비교하여 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study is to explore the average causal mediation effect of private tutoring on seoul middle school students' English achievement. To achieve the purpose, causal mediation model which was developed by Imai, Keele, & Tingley(2010) is applied. The data used for this study comprise the first to third year SELS(Seoul Education Longitudinal Study) data. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, the indirect and direct effect of private tutoring participation in second year were significant when controlling the selection bias of the private tutoring participation in second year. Second, the indirect effect of private tutoring participation in second year was significant, but the direct effect was not significant, when controlling the selection bias of the private tutoring participation in third year. Third, the indirect effect of private tutoring participation in second year was significant, but the direct and the total effect were not significant, when controlling both of the selection bias of the private tutoring participation in second and third year.
