인도네시아의 전통 미용관행과 데이 스파(Day Spa) : 자바(Java)와 발리(Bali) 사람들의 전통 미의식과 그 실천 양상을 중심으로

Traditional Beauty Treatments and Contemporary Day Spa in Indonesia : Focused on Javanese and Balinese Traditional Aesthetic Consciousness and Their Beauty Care Practices

본고는 현대 인도네시아의 데이 스파 소비 양태 속에 재배열 되어 녹아 있는 자바와 발리 사람들의 전통 미의식과 그 실천 양상을 논한 것이다. 이를 위해 연구자는 자바와 발리의 전통사회의 아름다운 여인상에 대한 담론을 고찰하였고, 아름다움의 획득을 위해 여성들이 실천하였던 다양한 전통 미용관행과 이에 사용되는 자무 처방 등, 전통지식들을 탐구하였다. 이어서 연구자는 이러한 전통 미의식과 전통지식들이 인도네시아의 데이 스파에서 재현되는 방식을 논함으로써, 비록 전통 미용관행과 자무에 관한 전통지식이 파편화하고는 있지만, 데이 스파가 현대 인도네시아의 여성들에 의해 전인적 아름다움을 획득하는 장소로 활용되고 있음을 발견하였다. 그럼으로써 본고는 한 사회의 가치체계와 로컬의 문화적 지식에 의해 중재되고 이해되는 미적 지각 과정과 미용관행을 분석한 것이며, 인도네시아인들이 이해하는 휴머니티의 모습을 탐구한 것이기도 하다.

This article deals with Javanese and Balinese traditional aesthetic consciousness and their traditional beauty care practices which are embedded in contemporary day spa salons in Indonesia. To that end, the researcher examined the traditional discourses of female beauty ideal in Java and Bali, and also reviewed traditional knowledge about beauty treatments, and herbal remedies which always accompany them. Furthermore, the researcher discussed how traditional aesthetic consciousness and traditional knowledge about beauty care are represented in day spa salons, and found that day spas serve as a place where customers strive to acquire comprehensive aesthetic experience, although traditional knowledge about beauty treatments undergoes fragmentations in day spa services. Therefore, this study has analyzed the path of aesthetic perception and practices which are mediated and understood by and through cultural value system and local cultural knowledge, as much as exploring the understandings of humanity in Indonesian culture.
