The purpose of this study is to analyze the global shipbuilding industry competitiveness between Korea and Japan as well as suggest measures to improve global competitiveness based on the results for the past 14 years covering the period from 1995 to 2014. According to TSI analysis for export competitiveness, there was no big difference in Korean export competitiveness(from 0.56 to 0.58) during the period from 1995 to 1996. Since 1997, however Korean export competitiveness continuously increased(from 0.81~0.91). According to Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage, while the comparative advantage of Korea is high enough from 1995 to 2013(0.86 to 0.82), Japan shows such a high comparative advantage until 2002(0.76 to 0.78 )but after2002, there is a downward trend(that is, export competitiveness declined to 0.50). Moreover, RCP analysis of both Korea and Japan shows a positive(+) increase, which means that these two countries are high performers in the international shipbuilding trade. The Hirschman-Herfindahl Index analysis, which is a measure of the market concentration of an industry, indicates however, that Korea (0.31) and Japan (0.73) has such a high market concentration on shipbuilding industry. Thus, because these countries have a weak trade structure, there is much room for improvement.
