A Study on the Import Dependency of the Korean Oils and Fats Industry

The purpose of this study is to find out how the import dependency of the Korean oil and fat industry has changed over the past 20 years and what the cause of such change is through the use of input-output analysis. Findings showed that the trade deficit, localization, and import dependency of the oils and fats industry have been generally improved for the past 20 years except vegetable oil and fat. However, in the case of vegetable oil and fat, the import dependency of intermediate goods was found to slightly increase due to a reduction of domestic production and the global financial crisis after import liberalization in 1991. In addition, it was found that the reason of trade deficit in the Korean oils and fats industry is not the increase in cosmetics exports but a rise in the domestic demand for oils and fats industry
