The purpose of the study was to validate the eating habit checklists developed for screening elementary school children at risk of energy overintake and inadequate micronutrient intake. A total of 1,077 elementary school students in Cheongju were asked to answer the questions on the checklists. Based on the results of the checklists, 140 children were diagnosed to be at high-risk of both energy overintake and micronutrient inadequacy. Nutrient intakes between 110 children in the high-risk group and 125 children in the low-risk group were estimated by 24-hour recalls for two days and compared. The high-risk group consumed significantly higher energy, carbohydrate, and fat, and lower energy from protein than the low-risk group. On the other hand, the intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, calcium, and dietary fiber in the high-risk group were significantly lower than those in the low-risk group. The Index of Nutritional Quality (INQ) of the micronutrients assessed except for thiamin were significantly lower in the high-risk group compared to the low-risk group. Our results indicate that the eating habit checklists previously developed were useful to screening elementary school children at risk of energy overintake and inadequate micronutrient intake.
