The Current Status and Improvement of Healing Environment for Children -Focused on the Play Therapy Centers in Seoul-

The purpose of this study was to analyze the current status and improvement of healing environment for children focused on the play therapy centers. A document research and field survey were used to analyze and classify the spatial characteristics of four play therapy centers in Seoul that were opened in 2005 or later. The results are as follows; (1) The play therapy room should be considered for secure of area and separation from management and service areas. (2) The types of storage furniture in play therapy room were verified in three aspects; the open type, closed type and mixed type. The open type is needed to be considered in planning with accessibility of children to educational materials, but the closed type can be applied in terms of creation of vibrant interior image. (3) Safety, diversity and environment -friendly interior finishing materials should be applied in planning of the play therapy room for children with developmental disabilities. (4) Interior walls of play therapy room can be covered with patterned, decorated and pastel-colored wallpapers not to be monotonous interior atmosphere. (5) Elements of natural landscape such as planting, waterfront space and interior landscaping should be considered in creating healing environment for children.
