Based on the 311 samples collected from the Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing industry, this study empirically examines the impacts of the inbound open innovation strategies such as external R&D collaboration, external R&D outsourcing, and external knowledge purchase on the SMEs’ product and process innovations. The open innovation paradigm suggests that implementing the inbound open innovation strategies are effective in generating more innovations for the SMEs which have the limited internal R&D resources but this study shows that not all inbound open innovation strategies have positive effects on the Korean SMEs’ product and process innovations. The empirical analysis results from this study reveal that external R&D collaboration has a positive effect whereas external R&D outsourcing and external knowledge purchase do not have significant impacts on the Korean SMEs’ product and process innovations. The new findings from this study are expected to deepen and widen the studies about the effects of open innovation strategies for the Korean SMEs’ innovations.
