Social Responsibility of Church in Korea

한국사회에서 교회의 도덕적 책임은 무엇인가? 미시적 차원에서 본다면, 수많은 주제들을 다루어야 할 듯싶다. 정치, 경제, 문화의 영역에서, 교회의 사회적 책임을 나열하는 것도 방법일 수 있겠지만, 이 글은 거시적 접근을 시도하였다. 특히 한국교회의 책임을 논하기 위한 신학적 기초를 '공공신학'과 '교회윤리'에서 찾고, 교회 밖으로 감당할 책임과 함께 교회 안에서 수행해야 할 책임의 문제를 조망하였다. 두 이론은 현대기독교윤리학의 중요한 두 흐름으로서, 각각 다른 방향에서 교회의 윤리적 책임을 말하고 있지만, 이 글에서는 한국의 시민사회에서 교회가 감당해야 할 책임의 문제를 상호보완적으로 제시한 것으로 해석하였다. 우선, 공공신학자 스택하우스는 교회의 공공성과 그리스도인의 공적 신앙의 중요성을 일깨워준다. 또한 교회윤리학자 하우어워스는 교회의 책무가 사회정책에 대한 참여에 있는 것이 아니라, 예수 내러티브에 충실한 교회 그 자체로서의 고유성을 지닌 교회됨의 구현에 있다고 강조한다. 한국의 시민사회에서, 교회는 그리스도인 및 교회지도자들의 부도덕성에 관한 시민적 소환장을 받고 있다. 교회는 어떻게 응답할 것인가? 교회가 공공성을 실현하기 위해 정치, 경제, 문화의 영역으로 나아가기도 전에, 오히려 그들에게서 교회 안의 공공성부터 챙겨보라는 충고를 받고 있는 셈이다. 공공성 구현이 교회의 중요한 사회적 책임인 것은 사실이지만, 교회 안에서부터 교회다움을 확보하는 것이 더 급선무인 정황이다. 한국교회가 한국사회를 향하여 사회적 책임을 말하기 위해서는 교회의 공공성에 대한 깊은 성찰과 함께 교회 자체의 교회됨에 대한 정체성의 확립에 힘써야 한다는 뜻이다.

What's the moral responsibility of church in Korea? There would be so many issues in micro-level. But, this paper is an theological proposal for Church's social responsibility in macro-level based on 'Public Theology' and 'Ecclesial Ethics'. Especially, this paper takes two rival perspectives as a complementary ethical responsibility of Korean Church. Of course, these two perspectives oriented to different directions to enact responsibility of Church. As we know, Max L. Stackhouse emphasizes the ethical meaning of public faith which undertakes public responsibility of Church. Public theology evokes Korean Church to realize social and public responsibility for political, economical, and cultural spheres. And Stanley Hauerwas insists that the most urgent task of Church is not to participate to social policy but to be the Church itself. He emphasizes the importance of being Church according to Jesus narrative via virtue ethics. In Korea, Church have got so many summons from society because of immorality of Christians and Church leaders. Unfortunately, before going out to public sphere, Church is faced to strong request for inner publicness. Church have to reflect herself seriously and carefully. This means the importance of being Church uniquely and properly. Now, Korea Church have to consider both 'Public Theology' and 'Ecclesial Ethics' as the urgent concern for social responsibility.
