The most difficult text to interpret in the Christian Scripture is probably the saying that Jesus came to the world to give a dagger rather than peace. This seems to be originated in Q 12:49-53. Biblical scholars have given various interpretations, none of them has provided a satisfactory one. However, following the analysis of Gerd Theissen, when this saying is understood in the historical background of the Roman Emperor Gaius Caligular's attempt to erect his status in Jerusalem in 41 C.E., its meaning can be suggested that the disciples of Jesus, namely the members of Q community, were urged to hold a dagger and resist against the idolatry. This kind of interpretation coheres with other sayings such as Q 14:26-27; 17:33.
