이태준은 장편소설에서 성적 정결을 숭상하는 의식을 명시적으로 표방하나, 이와 달리 단편소설에서는 성적 자유와 억압받지 않는 욕망 추구에 대한 소망을 은밀하게 노출한다. 이태준의 장편소설은 대의의 가치에 긴박된 작가의 표면적인 의식을 보여주나, 단편소설은 대의에의 헌신에 불안을 느끼고 회의하는 무의식을 함축한다. 이태준은 장편소설에서 개인주의를 준열하게 비판하고 집단적 가치와 이타주의를 숭상하지만, 단편소설에서는 인간 자체에 대한 환멸과 염증을 드러내고 고독을 예찬한다. 전반적으로 이태준은 장편소설에서 ‘있어야 할 것’의 규범을 충실히 따르고 단편소설에서는 ‘실제로 있는 것’을 노출한다. 장편소설에서 명시적으로 표방된 작가의식이 이상적이고 거대하다면, 단편소설에서 은밀하게 표출된 작가의 무의식은 대체로 당위에 반발한다. 이러한 분열은 실제 아버지에 대한 양가감정에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. ‘큰 뜻’에 투신하였으나 일찍 사망하여 가족을 불행으로 몰아넣은 실제 아버지에 대한 흠모와 원망의 양가감정이 아버지로 상징되는 세계에 대한 지향과 반발이라는 분열로 나타난 것이다. 아버지에 대한 추종 의식이 장편소설을 규정한다면 그에 대한 무의식적인 반발이 단편소설의 근저를 관통한다고 보인다.

Lee Tae-joon adores sexual purity and great will and criticizes individualism in his novels. On the contrary, he desires sexual freedom and feels the anxiety about great will and praises for solitude in his short story. His novels follow codes that ought to exist and his short stories want the free pursuit of desire. This division comes from the ambivalence between the follow-up and denial about his real father. His real father pursued the great will but put his family into tremendous misery. This led to the ambivalence between the respect and resentment for the father and it is the cause of the division that appears in the novels and short stories.
