매산(梅山) 정중기(鄭重器)의 생애와 시세계

Life and Poetry of Maesan Jeong Jung-gi

포은 정몽주의 후손으로 영일 정씨인 매산(梅山) 정중기(鄭重器, 1685-1757)는 18세기 영남 중부지역 학맥의 중심에 서 있었으며, 사후 영남 유림을 대변하는 거유로 인정받았다. 어릴 때 그에게 학문의 기반을 놓아준 부친 정석달은 매산에게 위기지학을 강조하였으며, 이는 매산의 학문적 의지가 되었다. 하지만 정작 매산에 대한 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 이에 그의 문집인『매산집(梅山集)』에 수록된 230수의 시를 내용 위주로 분석하여 그의 시세계를 살핀다. 따라서 본고에서는 그의 작품들 속에 일관되게 전개되고 있는 충절의식의 표현, 위선(爲先) 의지의 실천, 사문(師門)에 대한 정(情)으로 구분하였다. 매산은 가학에서 이어받은 정신인 충절과 위선사업을 가장 중요시하였다. 그가 과거급제를 한 이듬해 일어난 이인좌의 난 때는 스승 훈수 정만양･지수 정규양이 창의한 의병에 참여하였다. 또한 매산의 노력 덕으로 임진왜란 때 경주전투에서 공을 세운 6대조 정세아에게는 이후 시호(諡號)가 내려져 국가로부터 백세불천(百世不遷)의 종가로 공식 인정받게 되었다. 정세아의 아들이자 임란 때 순국한 정의번에게는 정려(旌閭)가 내려졌다.
