Hwalot(bridal topcoat) was korea's traditional wedding dress worn by princesses during the Joseon period. Later, it was used by commoners as well during weddings. The bride's robe was embroidered with decorative stitches, making it more stylish and attractive. For example, it is embroidered with unique patterns which symbolize longevith and good luck. In addition, the sino-korean letters 'Isongjiha'p and 'Baekbojiwon' and young boy holding a lotus flower in his hand are embroidered on the front. Across the robe were embroidered various flower patterns. For example, unique patterns are stithed upwardly in an orderly manner. Therfore, this study reviewed the types of patterns embroidered on hwalot and their symbolism and chose chrysanthemum pattern, peony pattern, japanese apricot pattern and butterfly pattern for nail design by taking the hwalot patterns as motives. Based on the five patterns, this study attempted to determine with creative nail design using hand printing, airbrushing, stone art gel art techniqes.
