In this study a patch test was carried out to examine the safety of four major body painting aqua cakes from four major companies. A total of 16 products--four colors from each brand--were chosen and examined cytotoxicity and patch tests. First, the amount of cell deaths was measured and it was found that the color black had the lowest cell survival rate with blue showing the highest survival rate. Also it was clear that among the different cell survival rate for each company, generally international brand products had higher cell survival rate than national brands. Patch tests were done on thirty subjects with the color red and black, which showed the lowest cell survival rate. According to the ICDRG valuation basis, none of the subjects had any red spots, edema responses , or any other skin reactions throughout the test period. In conclusion, cytotoxicity was negative. To summarize, various chemicals are contained in the body painting aqua cakes that cause some cell death in cytotoxicity tests. However, this study found that the patch test was reactionless. This concludes that the existing body painting aqua cake is harmless to the human body. However, body painting products are classed as other makeup products according to the national Cosmetics Acts, for which the ingredient standard is not terribly rigid. Especially as regards imported international products, which are exempted even from this Act, it would seem that systematic measurement is needed for safety. This study will contribute to active body painting product research and proposes the possibility of the development and manufacture of body painting products in the future through ingredient analysis and other safety tests.
