Maxine Hong Kingston, also known as 汤亭亭(Tang, Ting-ting) in Chinese, published The Woman Warrior in America. Her novel has long been studied and researched based on identity and feminism issues in America. In the novel, there is a woman, especially her mother who is the first immigrant from China to America. She had not adopted to the society because of her racial and cultural identity of Chinese. At the same time, the main character of The Woman Warrior is having been struggled between her ethnic identity and Chinese-American identity. ‘I’ in the novel has been through for the identity problem and complication, and those things are evidently revealed in the novel. The women in the novel did not try to escape from given circumstances and identity as a Chinese American, however, they made the best of their own based on the given circumstances. There reflected the traditional Chinese culture, Chinese mythology and legends. Kingston and the characters in her novel can be researched as the subjects of diaspora, and they keep trying to take active role and voice of their own. Kingston made her storytelling to make ‘I’ in the novel to become a real woman warrior, also, her growth in the novel represents wishful allusion and hope to display the writer’s optimistic view. This novel is open to discussion to be conducted in the boundary of Global Chinese literature(also mentioned in the article that I call it as Huawen Wenxue: 华文文学) . This is a transition and widening of view how to define Chinese literature in 21st century and to make it easy to approach to the understanding of culture and to make Kingston’s novel.
