A Study of PingDian of Chinese Classic Novel

Pingdian(評點) is the most typical type of criticism in the traditional China. It was originated from the comments for the lyrical and formal writings and was called fiction commentary(小說評點). The contents of pingdian was not only characterized as the complements for those of fiction writings, but also the presentation of new readings by those who wrote the commentaries. The extant pingdians dealt with the various fields of traditional fictions with diverse forms. The point is that such an unique type of criticisms was underestimated till now, though being important. It is recently that a group of scholars shed lights on the values of traditional fiction commentaries. Most of the researches, however, was focused on understanding of the fiction writings which contained pingdians. The true value of fiction commentary lies in how it could affect the reading of traditional fictions in the pre-modern China. The significance of traditional fiction commentaries was that those commentaries appreciated the aesthetic value of traditional fictions and transferred that to the reader. So we can not approach to the essence and substance of traditional Chinese fiction without comprehending those commentaries.
