The anecdote novels were prospering in the early age of the Republic of China. About 300 novels of this kind were published during this period. The great changes of the society, together with the novelists different choice in ideology, facilitate the prosperity of the anecdote novels in that historical period. The novelists employed anecdotes to show their attention to the reality and their affection to the people. These works reflect the back-to-the-ancient ideology of the writers, that is, depending on the upright officials and morality to save the people and the nation out of social crisis. These anecdote novels also reflect the traditional novelist and historical conception, and the historical characteristic in writing method.
