As many people are trying to shed new lights on fantasy novels and movies due to the rising popularity of western fantasy novels and movies, I investigated the sociocultural meanings and historical contexts how the oriental fantasy literature occurred and propagated. Although the scope and characteristics of fantasy literature may vary according to the point of views, this paper focused on the Korean and Chinese tales of immortals who are a legendary hermits with miraculous powers and have infinite capabilities beyond ordinary people. The tales of immortals crossing the border of life and death are important to understand fantasy literature peculiar to orient and provide a good opportunity for foreseeing characteristics of human studies to come next century. The investigation of works in the historical genealogy of fantasy literature makes it clear that the tales of immortals have been produced constantly and have become a principal part of Korean and Chinese fantasy literature. Fantasy literature has roles of revealing the desires of the public suppressed by the social orders and fulfilling the unfilled desires. On ontology fantasy literature has dual compositeness at the border of reality and surrealism and center and vicinity. This fact proves that fantasy literature is a composition based on the reality and provides the driving force for the creation and enjoyment of fantasy literature until now.
