The reality of petit-bourgeois’s life reflected on the novel is regarded to fully represent the original aspect, survival condition, and survival emotion in the special social-cultural environment in China. Therefore, this study is an attempt to dissolve how to define the mad person and madness in the social-ethical environment in China and how to recognize the definition. This study consists of the following parts; The madness expressed by the behavior, the linguistic expression of madness, and the relation between the psychological conflict and madness. With the Cultural Revolution as the background of this novel, the study considered Su Tong’s critical mind, which he didn’t mentioned directly but implied in the work, by deeply analyzing the behavior, language, and psychological fields of the madwoman and the ‘normal people’. In conclusion, the study unraveled Su Tong’s novel with Foucault’s recognition on the mad person and madness, which is regarded to be the dissolution of the thinking method we’ve already known and the creation of the space for discussion in the space of difference.
