The purpose of this study is to determine inherence and inevitability of violence through sutong(蘇童)’s first long novel rice(《米》). Primarily in this work, the rice is a symbol of human instinct and desire. but it change in quality as a means of damage to human dignity. This means instinct and desire of individuals to be a source to induce others to violence. Violence story of rice awaken widespread violence of reality. In this story, the city plays a role the various aspects in life converges to the conflict and collision. at that same time, characters of this novel imitate the violence each other, and accept violence as a way of handling problems. through this process, rice show properties of violence that interactive and cyclical. The one of reasons why we reading violence in novel is that can happen in reality. violence that wulong(五龍) exercised and happened in wajiangjie(瓦匠街) is not a individual case with unique personality and in a specific place. because they can not ignore structural similarity and continuity. violence that wulong exercised cause from aspects self-protection when threaten the survival and dignity, escalate in the conscious superiority to others. wajiangjie is a universal space that universal tendency of humans gathered. But when to be a group that universality with an individual may arise non universal situation, and that time, violence to be a major phenomenon. Because of them, although wajiangjie exist as a ‘the stat of nature’, but overlap with in the city the appearance of capitalism. Imbalance of social polarization and unlimited competition between individuals that a byproduct of the city always test Individuals with limitations, in this process, automatically mass produce ‘nonentity’. in addition, law and system in city and nation is returned as to be a moral and material violence.
