Lao Shes Novel, Doctor Wen, was the last work of his Shan Dong period. In this treatise the understanding of the era and the narration method in Doctor Wen are surveyed. Lao She set Doctor Wens background in Jinan just before the Japanese invasion. In this place and time Lao She described a corrupt character who had taken the Ph.D. degree in the U.S. Lao She depicted Doctor Wens naked desires and compared him to the ideal intelligentsia Tang Zhen Hua. Through the character of Tang Zhen Hua Lao She narrated the entirely opposite situation of the Chinese actuality. Her name means the prosperity and glory of the Empire Tang that was most honorable Chinese dynasty. Lao She showed his prayer in the novel that the Chinese Republic became the Empire Tang. The Intelligentsia must play an important role for the formation of modern national state. However Doctor Wen was blind to Chinese actuality. He didnt recognize the western imperialism and just mimicked the western life style. He denied all Chinese traditions and was wildly excited at the individual success in the corrupt society. For criticizing the negative characters Lao She used the traditional Chinese folk literary, Shan Dong Kuai Shu and Shuo Shu. By the use of narration method borrowed from the Chinese folk literary the negative characters in the novel were criticized and denied. This narration method renders the new insight and pleasure to the readers.
