It is well known that type-token ratio (TTR) and standardized type-token ratio (STTR) represent lexical diversity and that the latter solves the problem of sampling size of the former. This paper demonstrates that STTR is not suitable to be used to measure the lexical difficulty of the English text materials and provides an account for why and how this happens. Then, this paper proposes a vocabulary growth curve as a solution to the problem, where the advantages of both TTR and STTR are combined. Two kinds of texts (English novels and English textbooks) are compared with the vocabulary growth curves, and it is demonstrated how vocabulary growth curve analyzes these English texts differently. At the end, this paper illustrates how vocabulary growth curve can be used in English language teaching.
