예맥 족명과 부여, 고구려 국호의 유래와 의미

The Origin and Meaning of the Naming of Yemaek, Buyeo, Goguryo

부여, 고구려의 주된 구성 종족인 예맥은 본래 중국인들이 자신들의 동북방, 즉 만주와 한반도 일원에 있던 이민족을 칭하던 ‘예’에서 나온 것이며, 이민족에 대한 멸시적 뜻을 지닌 ‘맥’과 결합해 예맥으로 불린 것이다. 그러나 예족 내부에서 고구려가 그 세력을 키워나가자 여타 예족과 구분해 맥으로 칭하기 시작하며 맥은 고구려의 종족명으로 인식되기에 이르렀다. 예의 뜻은 동녘, 쇠 또는 ‘새롭다’라는 의미를 지닌 것으로 파악된다. 부여라는 국명은 그 의미가‘벌(평야)’, ‘사슴’, 종족명인‘예(濊)’ 등에서 비롯된 것으로 알려졌다. 그렇지만 본 연구를 통하여 부여는 고대 한민족에게 신성한 나무로 숭배되었던‘소나무’의 뜻을 지닌 것으로 밝혀졌다. 고구려는 그 국호의 의미가 대체로 ‘큰 성’, ‘수도’ 등의 뜻을 지닌 것으로 알려졌고, 고을이라는 단어의 어원이 되기도 하였다. 하지만, 이번 연구를 통해 ‘나라(국가)’ 자체를 일컫는 말이었음이 밝혀졌다.

Yemaek(濊貊) were an ethnic group who dwelt in Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula. They were a major group which had ancestral ties to Buyeo(夫餘) and Goguryeo(高句麗).The naming of ‘Yemaek’ is believed to be derived from a combination of two words, ‘Ye(濊·穢·薉)’ and ‘Maek(貊·貉)’. Chinese people originally called the different ethnic groups dwelt in northeast of China as ‘Ye’, and used ‘Maek’ as an opprobrious word toward these groups. However, ‘Maek’ gradually became Goguryeo’s own tribal name. Because Goguryeo remarkably increased in power and it began to call them ‘Maek’ to separate from other Ye tribes. ‘Ye’ is considered to have the meaning of ‘east’, ‘iron’, or ‘fresh’. It has been known that the name of Buyeo originated from the meaning of ‘field’, ‘deer’, and ‘Ye’ the tribal name. However, this study traces the etymology of ‘Buyeo’ came from ‘pine trees’ that ancient Korean worshiped as sacred trees. It has been generally known that Goguryeo had the meaning of ‘large castle’, ‘capital’, and so on. It was also the origin of Goeul(korean for county or town). However, through this study it is verified that Goguryeo meant ‘the state’ itself.
