The purpose of this study is to see the meanings of religious tolerance in modern society by considering the religious tolerance in medieval Muslim Spain. Religious tolerance in medieval Muslim Spain may be viewed in many different ways. I deal with religious tolerance in Cordova from CE 711 to the end of 8th century. There were different stages of religious tolerance of Mughit al-Rumi, Musa Ibn Nusayr, and Abd al-Rahman the First. In addition, the strategic value of the Jews, a civilized policy and convivencia, the tolerance that was secured by regulatory policy rather than the social equality were considered. Based on this study the religious intolerance of Christian dynasty at the same time was compared with religious tolerance in medieval Muslim Spain. And the significance of religious tolerance in medieval Muslim Spain was drawn. Modern society is a pluralistic society in terms of both religious and cultural aspects, so redefining these belief systems and value systems is imminent. In this regard, this study will be able to offer pluralistic suggestions of religious tolerance.
