Issues on the Subject of Korean Adjective Construction: Focusing on Kim (2005)

이 글은 김정남(2005) 『국어 형용사의 연구』를 비판적으로 검토한 서평 논문이다. 김정남(2005)는 의존문법을 이론적 배경으로 하여 한국어 형용사를 유형 분류하고 형용사의 형태적, 의미적, 통사적 특성을 살펴본 연구이다. 이 논문에서는 형용사 구문의 주어 문제를 중심으로 김정남(2005)를 살펴보았다. 형용사 구문의 주어에 대한 논의는 한국어 주어의 정체성, 형용사의 논항 구조, 주격중출 구문 등 국어 문법의 중요한 문제와 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 본고에서 다룬 형용사 구문의 주어와 관련한 몇 가지 쟁점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국어 형용사 구문의 주어의 범위에 관한 것이다. 형용사 구문의 주어 문제와 관련하여 김정남(2005)에서는 인칭 제약의 문제도 다루고 있는데 이도 다시 한 번 재론해 볼 여지가 있는 부분이다. 두 번째로 주어 표지를 어떻게 상정할 것인가의 문제이다. 김정남(2005)에서는 선행 연구들과 달리 형용사 구문에서 조사 '은/는'을 주격 표지로 보고 있는데 이는 실제 언어 자료에는 부합하지만 여러 가지 이론적인 문제를 불러일으킨다. 마지막으로 형용사와 주격중출 현상에 관한 문제를 살펴보았다. 본고는 이러한 쟁점을 중심으로 김정남(2005)의 형용사 구문의 주어 기술을 검토해 봄으로써 김정남(2005)의 학문적 의의를 짚어보고 형용사 연구의 방향성을 제시하고자 하였다.

This study aims to review Kim (2005), Gugeo Hyeongyongsaui Yeongu; Kim (2005) has suggested a classification of Korean adjectives according to the Dependency Grammar and examined morphological, semantic, and syntactic characteristics of Korean adjectives. This present article critically discusses Kim's arguments by focusing on problems regarding the subject of adjective construction, which are closely related to several key issues in Korean grammar: the investigation of subject, the argument structure of adjectives, the double-nominative construction, etc. This paper concerns three controversial issues concerning the subject of adjective construction. First, I discuss the identification of the subject in adjective construction and critically examine Kim's argument on the person constraint. Second, I oppose to Kim's assertion that the particle 'eun/neun' is a nominative case marker as it evokes several theoretical problems although it explains actual usages. Finally, some problems regarding double-nominative sentences are investigated. By reviewing Kim's discussions on the subject of an adjective construction, this paper intends to present the contribution that Kim (2005) has made and also to propose the direction of future studies on adjective.
