신라 서예의 다양성과 일관성 고찰

Diversity and Consistency of the Silla Calligraphy

지금까지 대부분의 선행 연구에서 신라 서예는 고구려나 백제 서예에 비해 상대적으로 수준이 낮은 졸박함으로 평가되었다. 이에 본고는 신라 서예의 참모습을 찾 아보기 위해서 재료별로 나누어 글씨의 특징을 살펴보았다. 먼저 진흥왕순수비를 제외한 나머지 6세기 석비는 모두 자연석이고, 따라서 그 글씨의 장법과 결구도 다양한 모습으로 표현되었다. 그러나 그 서체는 모두 예서의 필의가 있는 해서이며, 서풍도 고박함으로 신라색을 표현했다. 다음으로 6세기 묵서명의 글씨는 초솔하고, 6-7세기에 토기에 직접 음각한 초서는 유창하여 신라 말기의 서예가 상당한 수준에 이르렀음을 알 수 있다. 마지막으로 목간은 문서목간과 꼬리표목간으로 나누어지는데 전자는 비교적 정연 하게, 후자는 대부분 투박하게 써 내용에 따라 서자의 마음가짐이 다름을 보여준다. 꼬리표목간의 글씨는 6세기 금석문의 글씨와 유사한 분위기를 풍긴다. 본고는 신라의 서자들은 주어진 서사 환경을 적절하게 이용한 탁월한 구성으로 글씨의 다양한 모습을 표현했으며, 동시에 자신만의 고유한 색깔을 잘 드러내고 있 다는 사실을 분명히 보여준다. 이는 그들이 보편적이면서 동시에 주관적인 서예미감을 지녔다는 것을 말해준다.

This paper aims to seek the real characteristics of the Silla calligraphy. I performed it by dividing the materials into three parts: stone inscription, ink-writing and clay inscriptions, and wooden tablet writing. First, the shape of all stone inscriptions except the monuments commemorating King Jinheung’s tour is natural, and in order to accord with the shape the total composition and each character’s composition followed it. Despite the difference of composition, all the writings were written in regular script with the brush touch of clerical script, and calligraphic style is simple and naive following the character of natural stone. Second, the calligraphic style of ink-writing inscription in regular script is wild and carefree, and that of clay inscription in draft script is flowing. Third, the calligraphic style of wooden tablets is somewhat different in use. The document tablet was written in neat style and label tablet in free style. It tells us that the calligraphic style showing the writer’s mind changes if its content is different. Thus, Silla writers demonstrating diversity and consistency at the same time in their own possessed excellent esthetic sense in calligraphy.
