지속가능발전교육(Education for Sustainable Development: ESD) 담론의 평생교육적 함의

본 연구는 지속가능발전교육 담론을 분석하고 이에 대한 평생교육적 함의를 탐색하기 위하여 실시되었다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 지속가능발전과 지속가능발전교육의 전개 과정을 검토하고 지속가능발전교육을 둘러싼 주요 쟁점들을 살펴보았다. 또한, DESD의 10년 동안 한국에서 이루어진 지속가능발전교육 실천을 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 지속가능발전교육과 평생교육과의 관계를 탐색하였다. 지속가능발전교육은 경제발전에 따라 현대 사회가 맞닥뜨린 환경 이슈에서 시작되었고 지속가능발전을 위한 방안을 모색하는 과정에서 등장하였다. 한국의 지속가능발전교육 실천이 주로 환경교육 프로그램의 개발과 보급 중심으로 이루어지는 경향이 있지만, 지속가능발전교육의 원래 의미는 여기에만 국한되지 않으며 사회, 문화, 경제 이슈와 정의의 문제까지 포함하고 있다. 따라서 지속가능성에 대한 평생교육적 해법을 찾기 위해서는 공동체주의적관점 등 다양한 관점을 통한 문제 접근이 필요하다. 지속가능발전교육과 평생교육은 상호보완적일 수 있다. 지속가능발전이 사회 정의에 대한 고려를 통해 개인의 삶의 질 향상을 지향한다는점에서, 지속가능성은 평생교육의 중요한 가치이자 목적일 수 있기 때문이다. 평생교육은 또한지속가능발전교육을 위한 실천적이고 효과적인 전략을 제공할 수 있다. 지속가능발전교육의 목적을 성취하기 위하여 사회 시스템이 현재의 후기 체제에서 대안적 체제로 전환될 필요가 있다. 이런 맥락에서 비판적인 관점에서 발전한 평생교육의 공동체학습은 지속가능발전교육의 이념을실현시키는데 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the discourse of Education for Sustainable Development(ESD) and to draw the implication of ESD to lifelong education. To achieve this purpose, this study reviews the history and the contended points of ESD discourses. Also, this study examines practices of DESD in Korea during last 10 years and tries to find the relationship between ESD and lifelong education. ESD started from the environmental issues that the current society faces caused by the economic developmentalism and how is it possible to pursue sustainable development. Though practices of ESD in Korea have the tendency to focus on developing and spreading the environmental education program, the original notion of ESD is not restricted to environmental viewpoints, but also includes the problem of social, cultural, and economic issues and justices. To make solutions, we need to approach these problems with different perspectives such as holistic and communitarian ideas. From this perspective, ESD and lifelong education can be complementary relation each other. The notion of ESD can be the value and purpose for lifelong education because the sustainable development pursues to increase the quality of individual life with the consideration in social justice. Also, lifelong education can provide practical and effective strategies for ESD. To achieve the purpose of ESD, the social system should be changed radically from the neo-capitalism to the alternative perspectives. In this context, the community learning that lifelong education have developed as important educational methods in critical perspective can play a important role in realizing the idea of ESD.
