A Study on Hair Design applications of Depaysement

In modern times, people have become consumed by and subordinate to capital and power. Under these circumstances, they have expressed a strong desire for unique and extraordinary experiences, keeping a distance from selfish and superficial lifestyles and influences of high tech-oriented capitalism. An emotional space that ensures one’s own experience is surrealist depaysement. Depaysement is a combination of unconventional concepts, defying the reason-centric system of modernism. It offers a differentiated and unexpected emotional space, using the expression technique, which makes it feel strange. The following three designs are created by overcoming stereotypes on hairstyles using depaysement, the leading expression technique of surrealism: i) meta-nostalgia, which expressed a combination of contradictory images, ii) red-memory (expression of illusion by overlapping images), iii) trans-discovery (expression of shape distortion and deformation). In addition, the new possibilities of depaysement’s were experimented with by producing creative and imaginative hairstyles. This study attempted to expand the territory of hair design by introducing diverse methods for creative hair design.
