This study investigated the terminology and styles of classical hair in literature during the Joseon period. According to analysis of the terms of classical hair during the Joseon era, 17 and 26 different hairstyles were found among the upper and lower-class women, respectively. In addition, there were as many as 7 hairstyles which were observed in both groups. The commonly-known classical hairstyle-related terms were divided into those found in literature and customary ones. This kind of classification associated with a dual system in the wardrobe culture has been applied to classical hairstyles. Among them, the classical hairstyles (Juchichiljeokgwan, Daesu, Geodumi, Eoyumi, Sayang Meori, Eonjeun Meori, Ssanggye and Gulgye) and customary hairstyles (Gache Meori, Tre Meori, Cheopji Meori, Jjok Meori and Ttaeun Meori) were selected and searched for in literature. In terms of the literature, to ensure reliability, the records of observation and renowned scholars’ books were referred to. This study found the following: First, regarding classical hairstyle-related literature, ‘Gachesingeumsamok’ contained a great amount of information but has been poorly managed. Second, classical hair-related terms in current use were historically proven through literature analysis. It appears that these terms could be standardized at any time. Third, a lot of data was found in literature. In addition, many classical hair-related data in literature were kept in their original language. It is expected that the terms of classical hair repeatedly used in historical TV series and literature will be standardized and properly used based on accurate grounds and resources.
