This paper presents a syntactic analysis of verbal noun constructions, in which verbal nouns are directly merged with a verbal element such as sikhita, toyta, hata, and ita. Based on the Distributed Morphology, this paper discusses a structure of a verbal noun, characterized as having an argument structure, which is distinct from nouns in general, and also identifies realization conditions of those verbal elements. Verbal nouns, which are acategorial in themselves, project Root phrases by merging with their internal arguments. Verbal elements such as sikhita, toyta, hata, and ita are analyzed as realizations of v with different feature specifications, which verbalize the Root phrases and determine their types of eventualities. The analysis given in this paper can provide a principled account with asymmetries in argument realizations of verbal noun constructions.
