Effects of listening strategy training on EFL learners' TOEIC listening test performance.

The purpose of the study is to investigate effects of listening strategy training on EFL learners' TOEIC listening test performance. For this study, 229 college freshmen were divided into two groups-experimental (116) and control (113)-and three listening ability levels-high, mid, and low in each group. The experimental group was trained with listening strategies selected based on the test item types of TOEIC listening test while the control group was engaged in the traditional question-solving activity. The results were 1) the listening strategy training exerted positive effects on the experimental group learners' TOEIC listening test performance; 2) the learners in the experimental group showed different test performance depending upon the test item types; and 3) the strategy training had different effects on the learners' test performance in accordance with their listening ability and the item types. Such findings indicate that listening strategy straining tailored for EFL learners' specific purpose of listening will be conducive to a substantial improvement of their listening proficiency.
