Analysis of Care Hospital Location Factors by using Fuzzy Sets and AHP Focusing on the Seoul Metropolitan Area

Aging population increases social and economic burden. Due to the specifity of geriatric diseases that disables normal daily lives, the aging population that needs to have long-term care and use care hospitals is increasing. Therefore, it is important to select a location suitable for care hospital. Based on these problems, the research evaluated location factors including accessibility, demand factors, supply factors, environment factors with variables that have strong effects on location of care hospitals, through the analysis using GIS which enables geographical analyses of care hospitals. Firstly, the Seoul region, with the highest location evaluation score, had the highest population density of the elders above 65 years old whereas the supply density of care hospitals was low. To increase qualitative supply of care hospital, it is necessary to supply care hospitals in Seoul with the highest demand. Secondly, the Kyungki-do and Incheon with areas the next highest location evaluation scores had lots of regions with good accessibility of public transportation to and from Seoul. On the other hand, regions with lower location evaluation scores were those with lower land value such as semi-industrial districts, In these areas, the supply of care hospitals are concentrated due to the low land value despite poor environment. The oversupply problem of care hospitals, which has been an issue recently, seems to have occurred due to the concentrated supply of new care hospitals in districts with lower land values and poor environmental conditions. Accordingly, it is considered that new policies such as the regional location regulation is required to have balanced supply of care hospitals dispersed over metropolitan areas.
